A Nano Crystal Coat, which features nano-sized crystal particles that effectively reduces flares and ghosting, works in tandem with two fluorite lens elements and Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass elements. Never lose track of your subject, even during high-speed continuous shooting, with remarkable autofocus (AF) tracking and stable auto-exposure (AE) control through the adoption of an electromagnetic aperture mechanism. Employing two fluorite lens elements realizes an outstandingly light body
Weight is approx. 3,090 g, lighter than the current AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/4G ED VR by approx. 790 g, with a length shorter by approx. 4 mm. This facilitates composition change even for quickly moving subjects and enables easy transportation. Magnesium alloy adopted for the lens barrel also contributes to durability and light weight.

Superior optical performance via the adoption of fluorite lens elements
Employs two fluorite lens elements and three ED glass elements plus Nano Crystal Coat to achieve high optical performance with minimized chromatic aberration and ghost effect.

Vibration Reduction (VR) system provides an effect equivalent to a shutter speed 4.0 stops* faster in NORMAL mode
Image blur caused by camera shake is effectively reduced by the built-in Vibration Reduction function. In the evolved NORMAL mode, when the camera is set on, a half-press of the shutter-release button instantly activates the VR function for improved blur-reduction effect.

Improved VR performance in NORMAL mode when the power is on
VR performance immediately after the power is turned on with the VR mode set to NORMAL has been improved, providing a more stable viewfinder image and enhanced blur-reduction effect on the resulting images.

SPORT mode is adopted as a VR mode option to cope with quick movements
SPORT mode is especially effective when shooting sports, for example, in which subjects are radically moving. This mode has also been enhanced so that a more stable image can be viewed even when tracking a moving subject.

Improved AF tracking capability
AF tracking performance has been significantly improved for the shooting of subjects with unpredictable movement, such as those slightly moving, moving at random speeds or approaching the camera at high speed.

Electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism is adopted
A diaphragm blade unit with drive mechanism is incorporated in the lens barrel, enabling diaphragm control via electric signals from the camera body. This ensures stable AE control even during high-speed continuous shooting.

Fluorine coat for enhanced durability and dust prevention

Fluorine coat is applied to a meniscus protective glass at the lens front. While inheriting the durability and high weather-resistance performance of the current lens, this coating effectively repels dust, water droplets, grease or dirt for easy removal even if they adhere to the lens surface, making the lens applicable to any shooting environments as well as facilitating lens care.
